Thomas Austin
Thomas Austin, son of Joshua and Polly Ann Austin, was born
May 22, 1838; died May 3, 1918, aged 79 years, 11 months and 11
days.
He was left fatherless at 9 years of age and commenced making
his own living at the age of 11 years. By dint of hard labor and
good management he secured a competency, he being classed as one
of Pope county's best and most prosperous farmers.
He was married to Mary Elizabeth Tanner Oct. 7, 1858_almost 60
years ago_ by Eld. E. Parmley ( his uncle) these being the first
couple whom he married after his ordination. To this union nine
children were born _ three boys and six girls. All are living
except the fifth child, Missouri, who died 21 years ago.
52 years ago last March he and his companion joined the Mt. Zion
Baptist church of Pope County and were baptized by Eld. George
Lewis. He lived a true, humble and obedient Christian until death.
his life was an influence for good that will live on.He was a
messenger to Big Saline Association for almost forty years.
He had 38 grandchildren, 33 of whom are living; 18 great-grandchildren,
15 living; one brother, Uncle Pleas; his age companion, and several
relatives and a host of friends to mourn his death.
The funeral was conducted by Eld. E. R. Steagall and assisted
by Elder G. W. Parmley. Interment at Mt. Zion in the presence
of sorrowing relatives and friends."
