"Grace Lauderdale Slack, daughter of Uncle Jake and Aunt Fanny Lauderdale, was born in Pope County, Illinois, May 29, 1893. She passed away at the Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Chicago, October 27, 1958, after a brief illness of four days.
At an early age she professed faith in Christ and united with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. In later years she moved her membership to the Homberg Baptist Church.
On October 25, 1908 she was united in marriage to Elbert Slack. To this union were born eight children, all of whom were with her at the time of her passing. They are: Lewis Slack, and Golda Gibson of Golconda; Merrill of Decatur, Ill., Marion Nave and June Triner of Chicago; Jewel Stuteville of Florida; Coy of Benton, Ky., and Mary Lou Barger of Moline, Ill.
They, with 13 grandchildren; one brother, Charles Lauderdale of Herrin, Ill., and two sisters, Ivy Stewart of Manteno, and Sylvia Benson of Chicago survive, also a large number of relatives and friends.
Her husband, Elbert Slack, passed away on August 27, 1954. Seven brothers and sisters also preceded her in death.
Her acts of kindness, life of courage, and deeds of love speak more eloquently than any words that we might pen. They will live long in the hearts of those who loved her.
Last rites were held Thursday, October 30, at 2:00 P. M. in the Mt. Zion Baptist church with the Rev. Ivan Christoff and the Rev. John L. Cox officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, with Buchanan Funeral Service, Golconda, in charge of arrangements."
